LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lots of superheroes add up to lots of money for "The Avengers."

The film featuring a team of Marvel Comics heroes pulled in $80.5 million in its domestic debut Friday, the second-best haul ever on opening day.

"The Avengers" trails only last year's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which took in $91.1 million in its first day on the way to a record weekend of $169.2 million.

The huge opening for "The Avengers" launches what's expected to be a colossal summer for Hollywood, whose domestic revenues already were running 14 percent ahead of last year's going into the weekend.

Summer season began a year ago with the Marvel Comics adventure "Thor," one of the solo superhero sagas that led to "The Avengers." ''Thor" earned a respectable $65.7 million for the entire weekend, while "The Avengers" brought in far more than that in a single day.

The superhero summer continues through July with two more blockbusters in the making: "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises."

Produced by Disney's Marvel Studios unit, "The Avengers" already is more than halfway toward beating the opening weekends of the second and third films on the debut charts.

At No. 2 is "The Dark Knight" with $158.4 million in its first three days, while this spring's blockbuster "The Hunger Games" is No. 3 with $152.5 million.

"The Avengers" opened a week earlier in many overseas markets, where it has pulled in blockbuster cash in a matter of days. The film added $30.3 million internationally Friday, bringing its overseas haul to $334.3 million. Adding in its first-day domestic receipts, "The Avengers" has climbed to a worldwide total of $414.8 million.

Directed by Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), "The Avengers" stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.

Samuel L. Jackson plays Nick Fury, the superhero recruiter who teams them up to fight off an invasion of Earth plotted by Thor's wicked brother (Tom Hiddleston).

What killed Lenin? Stress didn't help, poison eyed

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Stress, family medical history or possibly even poison led to the death of Vladimir Lenin, contradicting a popular theory that a sexually transmitted disease debilitated the former Soviet Union leader, a UCLA neurologist said Friday.

Dr. Harry Vinters and Russian historian Lev Lurie reviewed Lenin's records Friday for an annual University of Maryland School of Medicine conference that examines the death of famous figures.

The conference is held yearly at the school, where researchers in the past have re-examined the diagnoses of figures including King Tut, Christopher Columbus, Simon Bolivar and Abraham Lincoln.

The 53-year-old Soviet leader suffered several strokes before dying in 1924 and what caused them isn't clear.

An autopsy found blood vessels in his brain were extremely hardened, results that have been difficult to understand, said Dr. Philip Mackowiak, who organizes the yearly event.

"Number one, he's so young and number two, he has none of the important risk factors," Mackowiak said.

Lenin didn't smoke ? he never let smokers near him. He also didn't have diabetes, wasn't overweight and the autopsy didn't find any evidence of high blood pressure, said Mackowiak, director of the medical care clinical center of the VA Maryland Health Care System, a co-sponsor of the event.

There was "considerable suspicion" among Russians at the time of Lenin's death that syphilis was to blame, Mackowiak said.

However, family history appears to have worked more against Lenin, Vinters said.

Lenin was treated for syphilis using the primitive medications available at the time, and while the sexually transmitted disease can cause strokes, there is no evidence from his symptoms or the autopsy that was the case with Lenin, Vinters said.

The Soviet leader's father died at 54 and both may have been predisposed to hardening of the arteries. Stress also is a risk factor for strokes, and there's no question the communist revolutionary was under plenty of that, the neurologist said.

"People were always trying to assassinate him, for example." Vinters said.

Lurie, a St. Petersburg-based expert in Russian history and politics who also spoke at the conference, said that while Lenin had several strokes, he believes Josef Stalin may finished him off with poison, a theory that Vinters said is a possibility.

Lenin's health had been growing worse over time. In 1921, he forgot the words of a major speech and he had to learn to speak again and write with his left hand after one stroke. A major stroke later left him paralyzed on one side and unable to speak.

However, Lurie said Lenin had recovered enough in early 1924 that he celebrated the new year and went hunting. Lenin, who supported Stalin's rise to power, may have realized he made a mistake and began aligning himself with Leon Trotsky, which caused Stalin to poison Lenin, the historian said.

Poisoning, in fact, eventually became one of Stalin's favorite methods of disposing of enemies, Lurie said.

"The funny thing is that the brain of Lenin still is preserved in Moscow, so we can investigate," Lurie said.

Lenin's embalmed body also still lies on public display in a Red Square mausoleum almost 20 years after the collapse of the communist state he helped bring to life.

Vinters, who reviewed autopsy records and the leader's clinical history, said toxicology tests that might have revealed poisoning were not conducted during the autopsy. Reports from the time also show Lenin was active and talking a few hours before his death.

"And then he experienced a series of really, really bad convulsions which is quite unusual for someone who has a stroke," Vinters said.

Light touch keeps a grip on delicate nanoparticles

ScienceDaily (May 4, 2012) ? Using a refined technique for trapping and manipulating nanoparticles, researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have extended the trapped particles' useful life more than tenfold. This new approach, which one researcher likens to "attracting moths," promises to give experimenters the trapping time they need to build nanoscale structures and may open the way to working with nanoparticles inside biological cells without damaging the cells with intense laser light.

Scientists routinely trap and move nanoparticles in a solution with "optical tweezers" -- a laser focused to a very small point. The tiny dot of laser light creates a strong electric field, or potential well, that attracts particles to the center of the beam. Although the particles are attracted into the field, the molecules of the fluid they are suspended in tend to push them out of the well. This effect only gets worse as particle size decreases because the laser's influence over a particle's movement gets weaker as the particle gets smaller. One can always turn up the power of the laser to generate a stronger electric field, but doing that can fry the nanoparticles too quickly to do anything meaningful with them -- if it can hold them at all.

NIST researchers' new approach uses a control and feedback system that nudges the nanoparticle only when needed, lowering the average intensity of the beam and increasing the lifetime of the nanoparticle while reducing its tendency to wander. According to Thomas LeBrun, they do this by turning off the laser when the nanoparticle reaches the center and by constantly tracking the particle and moving the tweezers as the particle moves.

"You can think of it like attracting moths in the dark with a flashlight," says LeBrun. "A moth is naturally attracted to the flashlight beam and will follow it even as the moth flutters around apparently at random. We follow the fluttering particle with our flashlight beam as the particle is pushed around by the neighboring molecules in the fluid. We make the light brighter when it gets too far off course, and we turn the light off when it is where we want it to be. This lets us maximize the time that the nanoparticle is under our control while minimizing the time that the beam is on, increasing the particle's lifetime in the trap."

Using this method at constant average beam power, 100-nanometer gold particles remained trapped 26 times longer than had been seen in previous experiments. Silica particles 350 nanometers in diameter lasted 22 times longer, but with the average beam power reduced by 33 percent. LeBrun says that their approach should be able to be combined with other techniques to trap and hold even smaller nanoparticles for extended periods without damaging them.

"We're more than an order of magnitude ahead of where we were before," says LeBrun. "We now hope to begin building complex nanoscale devices and testing nanoparticles as sensors and drugs in living cells."

Mars Rover Turns Up Evidence Of Water

Such as the Tardigrade ("Water Bear") [wikipedia.org]...

Tardigrades are able to survive in extreme environments that would kill almost any other animal. Some can survive temperatures of close to absolute zero (273 C (459 F)), temperatures as high as 151 C (304 F), 1,000 times more radiation than other animals, and almost a decade without water. Since 2007, tardigrades have also returned alive from studies in which they have been exposed to the vacuum of outer space for a few days in low earth orbit.

It seems to me that organisms like this would be able to survive on Mars, even in it's current conditions, so it seems to me that we're going to discover some form of elementary life on Mars eventually, it's just a matter of time (and looking in the right places, which could be miles below the surface for all we know).

Still, as a layperson that reads stuff like this as a hobby, I think we'd discover life on Europa [wikipedia.org] first...if we ever manage to figure out a way to get a probe under the ice (and of course keep it completely sterile, which given the hardiness of those water bears would seem to be damn hard to do beyond any shred of doubt for an earth-originating probe).

Does the tea party have a second act?

The 2010 midterm elections were marked by ubiquitous images of voters waving Gadsen flags in the sun, women with tea bags hanging from their hat brims, and determined men in Paul Revere costumes shouting proclamations.

What happened to those people?

If you ask the people who helped organize the tea party into a movement, they'll readily concede that tea party rallies this election cycle are not as prolific as they were in 2010.?But they say they're doing one better this year: Instead of simply rallying, they're organized and on the ground (and on the phone, in your mailbox and on your radio and television) in select states to try to elect tea party candidates to office and effect what they say is "real change."

"The movement has matured ? and we're now tea party 2.0," Amy Kremer, chairwoman of Tea Party Express, told Yahoo News. Kremer and other tea party leaders say that while the tea party rose to fame in 2010, that cycle was just a learning period for the movement.

"In 2010, we didn't have our feet under us," Brendan Steinhauser, the federal and state campaigns director of FreedomWorks, told Yahoo News. Instead of a "haphazard" plan, as he described it, 2012 will bring a "much more sophisticated approach."

The tea party in 2010 made headlines for its rallies, its anger and its energy. But its most lasting changes came in the form of getting tea party candidates elected to office, sometimes at the peril of establishment Republicans. The movement's leaders say they plan to do the same this cycle.

"Some folks think the tea party has gone away because they're not out seeing 5,000 at a time waving 'Don't Tread on Me' flags," Indiana Senate challenger and tea party candidate Richard Mourdock told Yahoo News last week. "But where they are, are working as volunteers in campaigns like this campaign."

If Mourdock, the state treasurer, defeats Sen. Dick Lugar on May 5, he will largely have the tea party to thank.

His campaign fits the tea party narrative: The 36-year Senate veteran Lugar is being portrayed as too moderate for his state, having voted for the bailouts, for President Obama's stimulus bill, and to confirm Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. Mourdock, who sued over the auto bailout, casts himself as a limited-government fiscal conservative.

Two years ago, tea party supporters in Indiana split between two candidates in the state's Senate Republican primary. In an example of how 2010 was a learning period for the movement, an umbrella organization called Hoosiers for a Conservative Senate was created to unify the tea party behind a single candidate.

Late last year, the new organization brought together 55 tea party groups across the state to endorse Mourdock.

"We were learning the process in 2010," Monica Boyer, who helped found the group, told Yahoo News of the tea party in general. "We were angry about what was going on, but we didn't know what to do about it."

She added, "Now we've gone into a working mode."

People from 47 tea party groups are expected to travel to Indianapolis on Saturday, according to Boyer, for an event to get out the vote for Mourdock ahead of Tuesday's vote.

A loss by Lugar would prove the strength of Hoosiers for a Conservative Senate to the state establishment as well as to the nation.

"It would be a victory for conservatism," Boyer said. "And for the heart and soul of the Republican party."

Their model for tea-party unity is being replicated in states like Michigan, Oregon and Iowa, Boyer said.

The leaders of national tea party groups, such as Tea Party Express and FreedomWorks, both of which endorsed Mourdock, believe a Lugar loss would immediately "send shock waves" across the country, to use Steinhauser's words.

Amid the "media narrative: Is the tea party alive? This will put a temporary end to that discussion," Steinhauser said.?"The tea party is alive and well."

Tea party supporters already achieved one important victory this year. Last month, tea party challenger Dan Liljenquist pushed longtime Sen. Orrin Hatch into a primary in Utah. Liljenquist?and his team readily admit he now faces an uphill battle against a well-funded, well-known and experienced lawmaker in a statewide race, but his supporters say his victory was their first taste of winning this year.

"In Utah, people saw that the tea party was alive and well," Kremer said, adding that people now understand that for the tea party to survive, it must be part of the political process.

"If you want change, you have to change the players," she said.

The Tea Party Express, which is focused this year on helping Republicans win back the Senate, has endorsed five Senate candidates in addition to Mourdock: Ted Cruz in Texas, Sarah Steelman in Missouri, Jon Bruning in Nebraska, Josh Mandel in Ohio and Tom Smith in Pennsylvania.

FreedomWorks shares some of the same targets, plus additional House and Senate candidates, including incumbents such as Rep. Steve King of Iowa?a tea party star.

Steinhauser identified races in Texas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Missouri, Florida and Maine among those states where FreedomWorks is active.

Both organizations have made the recall election of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker a major focus in the weeks ahead. A Tea Party Express email to supporters Thursday stated:

This election is not only a fight for Wisconsin. It's a fight for our conservative values nationwide. A win on June 5 will be a referendum on those trying to stifle the voice of the people and hand power back to the big-government public union bosses that want nothing more than complete control of a state's budget.

Walker, who became a national target of the left last year when he took on public employee unions in his state, faces a recall primary May 8 that he is expected to win handily. The real fight to hold his seat looms on June 5, when he faces a Democratic opponent.

The tea party regards the effort to recall Walker as unfair and unwarranted.

"It's one thing to recall somebody for not doing their job," Kremer said. "It's another to recall them if you have a problem with their ideology."

With the effort, money and energy the movement has put into Walker's recall, Mourdock's primary and other local elections this year, the tea party has effectively turned these races into the?determining factor of whether it will be viewed as a major force in politics after 2012.

Even so, the Tea Party Express and select additional groups (but not all) plan to be involved in the presidential race even though Mitt Romney is not regarded as a tea party favorite.

"I?will work my heart out," for whomever wins the nomination, Kremer said. "We can't afford another four more years of President Obama."

Zombie ant fungus, meet the anti-zombie-ant fungus

A new study has found that a zombifying ant fungus can be kept at bay by another pathogen.

It turns out that it takes a fungus to control one.

For the first time, researchers have discovered how an ant colony can survive an onslaught of zombie-fungus, also known as Ophiocordyceps, a behavior altering, deadly parasite.

Ophiocordyceps enters an ant's brain, causing it to march to its death at a mass grave. Once the ant is dead, the fungus produces more infectious spores.

In their new study, David Hughes, an entomologist at Penn State and his team describe a hyperparasitic fungus ? that is, a parasitic fungus that exploits another parasitic fungus ? that helps ants to ward off a zombie epidemic.

"In a case where biology is stranger than fiction, the parasite of the zombie-ant fungus is itself a fungus," Hughes said in a statement.

Ants are the dominant creature of all land-based ecosystems. In tropical forests, for example, almost 70% of individual insects are ants. They provide ample opportunities for scientific investigation.

Previous research has shown that ants groom each other and themselves to defend their colonies against pathogens such as fungi.

Hughes and his group modeled ant behavior in order to see grooming's effect on restricting infection. They found that combined with the ant's own grooming practices, the hyperparasitic fungus significantly limited the spread of the deadly, zombifying Ophiocordyceps.

Many ants become infected with the Ophiocordyceps fungus because it grows slowly, producing immature spores for about a month after killing its host.

However, the likelihood of an individual ant becoming a zombie is relatively low because the young spores are susceptible to the hyperparasitic fungus.

"Because the hyperparasitic fungi prevents the infected zombie-ant fungus from spreading spores, fewer of the ants will become zombies," explained Hughes.

The new study is available online in PLoS ONE.

New study finds possible link between the hormone ghrelin and hedonic eating

When eating is motivated by pleasure, rather than hunger, endogenous rewarding chemical signals are activated which can lead to overeating, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM). The phenomenon ultimately affects body mass and may be a factor in the continuing rise of obesity.

"'Hedonic hunger' refers to the desire to eat for pleasure, and to enjoy the taste, rather than to restore the body's energy needs,"says Palmiero Monteleone, MD, of the University of Naples SUN in Italy and lead author of this study. "For example, desiring and eating a piece of cake even after a satiating meal is consumption driven by pleasure and not by energy deprivation. The physiological process underlying hedonic eating is not fully understood, but it is likely that endogenous substances regulating reward mechanisms like the hormone ghrelin and chemical compounds such as 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) are involved."

In this study, researchers assessed eight satiated healthy adults, aged 21? years, feeding them each their personal favorite food and, later, a less-palatable food of equal caloric and nutrient value. Researchers periodically measured 2-AG and ghrelin levels. The plasma levels of ghrelin and 2-AG increased during hedonic eating, with the favorite foods, but not with non-hedonic eating. This increase suggests an activation of the chemical reward system, which overrides the body's signal that enough has been eaten to restore energy.

"Hedonic hunger may powerfully stimulate overeating in an environment where highly palatable foods are omnipresent, and contribute to the surge in obesity,"says Monteleone. "Understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying this eating behaviour may shed some light on the obesity epidemic. Further research should confirm and extend our results to patients with obesity or with other eating disorders in order to better understand the phenomenon of hedonic eating."

Other researchers working on the study include: Pasquale Scognamiglio, Alessio Maria Monteleone, Benedetta Canestrelli, and Mario Maj of the University of Naples SUN, Naples, Italy; and Fabiana Piscitelli and Vincenzo Di Marzo of the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry, Pozzuli, Italy.

The article, "Hedonic eating is associated with increased peripheral levels of ghrelin and the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoyl-glycerol in healthy humans. A pilot study," appears in the June 2012 issue of JCEM.

Oil below $102 as traders eye key US jobs data

(AP) ? Oil prices fell below $102 a barrel Friday in Asia amid investor concern U.S. jobs growth last month may disappoint and suggest demand is weakening.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down 98 cents to $101.56 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.68 to settle at $102.54 in New York on Thursday.

Brent crude for June delivery was down 67 cents at $115.41 per barrel in London.

Traders will be closely watching April employment figures scheduled to be released later Friday. Analysts expect the economy added about 165,000 jobs last month. Businesses created 120,000 jobs in March, far fewer than the 205,000 that analysts had forecast.

On Thursday, the government said worker productivity fell sharply in the first three months of the year while U.S. service companies, which employ about 90 percent of the work force, expanded more slowly in April.

"The markets will be holding a collective breath ahead of the U.S. jobs report," energy trader and consultant The Schork Group said in a report. "Recent headlines suggest the number might underwhelm."

Oil prices have been little changed on light trading volume during Asian business hours this week amid a slew of public holidays across the region.

In other energy trading, heating oil was down 1.3 cents at $3.07 per gallon and gasoline futures fell 0.1 cent at $3.04 per gallon. Natural gas was up 2 cents at $2.36 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Irish, British men charged in Stratfor hack: US

6 hrs.

Federal prosecutors said four Irish and British men charged in a crackdown on the international hacking group Anonymous also helped breach the security analysis company Stratfor last year.?

In an indictment made public on Wednesday, Manhattan federal prosecutors said the four men, previously charged in March, were part of the "Antisec" faction of Anonymous that disclosed in December that it had hacked into Strategic Forecasting Inc, or Stratfor.

Stratfor is dubbed a "shadow CIA" because it gathers non-classified intelligence on international crises.

Until Wednesday, only 27-year old Chicago hacker Jeremy Hammond had been formally charged with the Stratfor breach. Hammond, who is in custody in New York, was formally indicted on Wednesday for the first time, and has yet to be arraigned. His lawyer declined comment.

Hammond's arrest was announced on March 6 along with charges against the four suspected "AntiSec" members, Donncha O'Cearrbhail and Darren Martyn of Ireland, and Jake Davis and Ryan Ackroyd of Britain.

In announcing the charges in March, U.S. authorities revealed that a leading hacker known online as "Sabu" was Hector Xavier Monsegur, and that he was arrested at his small apartment in a Manhattan housing complex last June and had been cooperating with the FBI ever since.

U.S. authorities said all six men were top members of LulzSec, an offshoot of the loose-knit cyber-activist group Anonymous. Some of the men had also joined interlinked factions called "AntiSec" and "Internet Feds," the authorities said.

LulzSec and Anonymous have taken credit for carrying out attacks against the CIA, Britain's Serious Organized Crime Agency, Japan's Sony Corp, Mexican government websites and the national police in Ireland. Other victims included Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper arm News International, Fox Broadcasting and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Wednesday's indictment also charged Hammond, known online as "Anarchaos," and Davis, known as "Topiary," with a June 2011 hack of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The four Irish and British defendants are charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit computer hacking, which each carry a 10-year maximum prison term. Hammond is charged with two hacking conspiracy charges and one substantive hacking count. He also faces one count each of aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to access device fraud.

The case is U.S. v. Ryan Ackroyd et al, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 12-185.

A Brief Overview On The Causes Of Back Acne | Millionaire Article ...

?

By Barbarella Alderson

Women who want to look like a million dollars in a backless dress will practically find it embarrassing to wear one if her back is speckled with acne. While acne are typically seen on the face, it is not uncommon to find acnes on the back.

Does it ever happen to you?

If it?s your dream to have a flawless back, however, it would help if you know the causes of back acne because then you can find ways to prevent them before they even start to breakout.

What Causes Back Acne ? Can I Get Rid of It?

The exact causes of back acne, or any kind of acne for that matter, still remain unknown. However, several factors have been linked to the development of such skin disorder, such as hormones, overactive sebaceous glands, sweat, excess dead skin cells, dirt, improper skin care, infection, stress, genetics, medications, and diet.

Health professionals say that all kinds of acne are hormonal in nature. This means that nearly everyone is at risk of having acne spots, be it on the face or on the back. The high levels of hormones during the teenage years can usually bring about overactive oil glands. Acne results when the excess oil clogs the hair follicles and skin pores. Acne can get worse if oil and sweat combine with dead skin cells and dirt. This is why you should always wash your face with a good facial cleanser.

The Link Between Bacteria and Back Acne

The presence of infection is yet another one of the most prevalent causes of back acne. Certain bacteria, known as Propionibacterium acnes, are strongly linked to the formation of acnes of all kinds, including back acne. Stressful situations can worsen the condition and genetics are a major contributor to the likelihood of breakouts.

Some medications can also trigger the development of acne on the back, such as Predisone, Dilantin, Disulfuram, Immuran, Isoniazid, Quinine, and thyroid preparations like Thiourea and Thiouracil. The next time you visit your physician or phamacist, be sure to highlight any history of acne that you may have.

A number of foods are also associated with acne flare-ups, including fatty foods, dairy products (cheese, ice cream, skimmed milk), refined carbohydrates (white bread, white rice, pastries), caffeine (coffee, black tea, chocolates, sodas), and processed foods.

These are just some of the most common causes of back acne. Bear in mind though that there are cases where in a separate disorder is responsible for its formation.

Justin Bieber Teases Next Believe Single

During 'MTV First: Justin Bieber,' pop star says 'As Long As You Love Me' could be the next track to hit radio.

Justin Bieber is still riding high off the release of his new video for "Boyfriend." But with his next album, Believe, not too far off, Bieber told MTV News that fans might get the chance to hear more from the June 19 release sooner rather than later.

"Why did I choose 'Boyfriend' [for my first single]? I just thought it was ... a song that most represented me at the time and what I wanted to put out there, " he told Sway during "MTV First: Justin Bieber" on Thursday night (May 3). "It's crazy, because even my next single after that is going to be better."

Bieber didn't want to give out too many details about this even better next track, but he did reveal that the title recalls a certain hit by '90s teen idols the Backstreet Boys. "My next single, I don't have it completely set. ... I think it's 'As Long As You Love Me.' It's midtempo," Bieber said. "I think it's edgy."

With no exact details on when fans might get to hear the next single, he dished that a song he wrote for his mother, Pattie Mallette, could drop on May 13, whether or not it makes the album. "I wrote a song for my mom. But I'm going to put it out on Mother's Day," he said, explaining why Mama Mallette was worthy of her own track, "[It's] about the struggles, I say in the song. She had me at like the age I am now. [It's about] just the struggles she went through and how brave she was, and I think the world needed to know that."

LONDON -- Year after year, a new photo of the British child Madeleine McCann has emerged. They are a collection of pictures that would have taken pride of place in any happy family home if?they had been photos of a real child rather than the haunting computer-generated images of a girl who vanished into thin air five years ago.

Madeleine's name has become synonymous with parental despair --?a heartbreaking story that has no end.

Thursday marks the fifth anniversary of her disappearance while on holiday in Portugal. An international manhunt, numerous unsubstantiated sightings of her around the world, an unprecedented media campaign launched by her parents and a best-selling book followed, but so far, all of it has come to nothing.

The child's parents Kate and Gerry McCann are, clearly, as distressed about her disappearance as they are determined to find her.

In an interview with GMTV, a U.K. morning television show, they said that despite the passage of time they still had hope that Madeleine was alive.

"We've always believed that and we're realistic; we don't know what's happened, but we know there's a very good chance that she could be alive," Kate McCann said.?"There's no evidence to the contrary [and] ... year after year, missing children that have been abducted are found alive."

A combination of images showing missing British girl Madeleine McCann at the age of three (left) and a computer-generated image released by police showing what police believe Madeleine could look like aged 9.

"I think particularly the cases when they're younger children, it's often not horrendous circumstances," Gerry McCann added. "A lot of the kids are taken as babies or toddlers; [they] have just been brought up as normal children and obviously with the older children, it's been a bit more unpleasant, but they are capable and adaptable and cope well."

Other kids to continue search?
Despite the enormous stress and scrutiny the couple have been under for 5 years, they are still very much together and their two other children, twins Sean and Amelie, are showing signs of their parents' dogged determination.

"Even Sean said to me -- this is going back 18 months -- 'you know mummy if you haven't found Madeleine when we get older, me and Amelie will look for Madeleine,'" Kate McCann told GMTV.

"And I have absolutely no doubt about that, but I don't want them to have to be in the position where they're carrying around this kind of sadness and frustration or whatever ... to find Madeleine. We want to find her now," she added.

TODAY's Matt Lauer talks with Kate and Gerry McCann about the ongoing search for their daughter Madeleine, the clue they may have missed and the strain this investigation has had on their relationship.

What befell their family is the stuff of parental nightmares. Lucy Beresford is a psychotherapist who works in London and says couples whose children have been missing for long periods are forced to keep their lives on hold.

"It's a terrifying place to be; there is no proof one way or the other and a lot of speculation. The lack of clarity is exhausting," she said.

At a press conference given by the McCanns Wednesday, it was clear to see the media obsession with this story is far from fading.?And no one has worked harder to keep Madeleine's face and name in the spotlight than her mother and father.

Missing girl Madeleine McCann may be 'still alive'

It's hard to believe that half a decade has passed and yet she remains deeply imprinted in our minds. The credit goes to her parents who, despite their distress, have relentlessly pursued a high-profile and sophisticated campaign to find her.

At its peak their "Madeleine Fund" raised more than $3 million, much of which has been spent on private detectives searching for her.

Talking to the Pope, Oprah
And with a book, regular front-page headlines, a meeting with the Pope and a television appearance on Oprah, the McCanns have managed a very astute media campaign to keep their daughter in the spotlight.

Helping them with their media strategy is one of the smartest heads in the business, a tough former television reporter turned PR guru, Clarence Mitchell.

They hired him early on and now he's a close friend of the family. He went from being a professionally dispassionate journalist to really caring about the people he is working for.

British police have issued a new appeal for information on Madeleine McCann, the little girl who disappeared while vacationing with her family in Portugal five years ago. NBC's Tazeen Ahmad reports.

At every media appearance made by the McCanns, he stands nearby ready to leap to their defense. Many say he is their secret weapon.

And the timing last week of the British police's press conference could not have been better.?A full week before the actual anniversary, it grabbed headlines all week.

Andy Redwood, the police officer in charge of the British review of the investigation, told reporters that they were a quarter of the way through 100,000 documents and of these there were "195 investigative opportunities."

He said they had taken "two positions" on Madeleine's disappearance.?"One is that she is alive," he said, "and the other is that she is not, and in relation to the former and on the evidence we believe there is a possibility Madeleine is alive."

Headlines sprung up in the hours and days afterward, focusing on the idea that the child could be alive and the general public sat up and took notice.

Cop: Parents have to believe
I asked Colin Sutton, a former chief inspector of London's Metropolitan Police, for his take on what may be going on behind the scenes. Could Madeleine really be alive after all this time?

"Technically, you have to use these media opportunities to get help," he said, "you can't stress in an appeal that she may be dead or you are switching people off."

Sutton, who was in the police's murder squad, then told me about some depressing statistics that all those involved in the police case review would be fully aware of.

"If a person is missing for more than 48 hours, there is a 90 percent chance that they won't be coming back. A lot of the team will be thinking that she simply isn't alive," he said.

It's a fact, he added, that the McCanns also would have had to face and that while police officers would have been sensitive, they certainly wouldn't have shied from it as a distinct possibility.

"They would have been told she is dead," Sutton said, "and they would have accepted that, but they, as her parents, also have to believe that she will be found one day."

And that one day, the McCanns will be hoping, is soon.

Their campaign to find her has not lost momentum over the past 5 years.

It is certainly one of the most picture-friendly stories I have ever worked on. There are endless photos of this gorgeous little child, cute home video footage of her and her siblings.

Her telegenic, middle-class professional parents wear their grief with dignity and have appeared on our television screens over and over again.

But some are saying that this may be their last hope. And public opinion in Portugal is against the McCanns. Many still believe they were behind their daughter's disappearance.

With Portuguese authorities as yet failing to take the cue to reopen the investigation, the British police's efforts can only go so far.

Tantalizing dream of finding her
So on this fifth anniversary all we really have is this new image of Madeleine that the family are hoping will finally lead to the closure they need.

"Closure" is a word the British police used a lot last week.

When pushed on what this means, they said they simply want the case solved.

For the rest of us -- who have watched this story from afar, who want but are unable to help -- it's a poignant reminder that if she is still alive, she will be celebrating her ninth birthday next week. It is also a reminder that if she does reappear, it will be against all odds, making it an even more incredible story. ??

But at the moment, that remains just a tantalizing dream for the McCanns.

Kate McCann told GMTV she had imagined Madeleine being found alive, but tried not to.

"You know what, I don't that often because it's almost like ... it's so good, it's so beautiful I guess, that I don't want to take myself there and for it not to be real," she said. "I've had some dreams along the way, not recently and they're so tangible that it's incredibly painful because that's what we want every single day."

Casey Anthony Voicemail: Family Who Hid Her After Trial Asks "What is WRONG With You?"

The pastor's family that Casey Anthony hid with after her shocking murder trial acquittal last year left a scathing voicemail for her this January.

Pastor Steve Camp and his wife Cindy run the Cross Church of Palm City where Casey was rumored to be hiding out after her release from jail.

In the voicemail, Cindy voices heartbreaking betrayal and urges Casey Anthony her not to deal with powerhouse attorney Jose Baez any longer.

She also calls her out for being selfish and self-centered.

Casey Anthony Church

Cindy Camp lambasts Baez for taking advantage of their family and Casey, then goes OFF on the 26-year-old's recent behavior, with few specifics.

The voicemail was left in January 2012, just days after bizarre the Casey Anthony diary video showing off her "new life" somehow leaked online.

That same week, Baez called it quits, opting to no longer represent the accused child murderer. It's unclear why the two decided to part ways.

Here is the voicemail transcribed and obtained by Radar Online:

It is Friday night. I just listened to your conversation with Steve when you hung up on him. I want you to know something. You are dealing with the wrong person when you're dealing with Jose. He is the one that gives us up. This is no longer about you.

I've had media parked out front at the end of my driveway for the last 48 hours. People are protesting, they're throwing rocks, they're coming up to the door, some guys are leaving you notes and love letters. This is not about you. This is about our church, this is about my family. My daughter's picture has been on the Internet and Steve hasn't said a word. Not one word.

People are writing the most vile, repulsive things to him via e-mail and Twitter and Facebook and it's just disgusting and he has not said a word. You are siding with the wrong person. Jose is going to do you wrong. He's already done you wrong. He's sold us out and we know it for a fact. I don't care if you don't want to hear it, that is a fact.

You have a church here, you have people that care about you and have protected you. We haven't said a word, until, all of a sudden, it would be good to know that you were just going to up and leave four days ago, we could have made a very simple statement and avoided all of this hassle.

But this is unbelievable to me and I think you need to rethink and seriously pray about what you're doing. This has nothing to do with you down in your undisclosed location, it's right here hot in my yard, and we are still sticking up for you. I just want you to know that because we love you and we've cared for you. And that is not going to change. We will still protect you.

But this is just…don't you ever hang up on my husband again. He has been the truest strength you've ever had and the kids are just going to be heartbroken. I don't know what you're doing. I can't believe it. For once get outside your own head and think of someone else. Think of this family…they deserve thanks, thanks for having my back here, I'm sorry you have to go through this…nothing! It's just all about you! What is wrong with you?! Really?

Anyway, that's all I have to say so I guess we'll hear from you or something, I hope. Anyway, I do love you. I want you to think seriously about what you're doing, not just for you, but for all involved. Thank you. Goodnight.
